5 Reasons Why I Volunteer for USMF: Pari Aryafar

My name is Pari Aryafar, or you may know me better as “Pari-Cherry.” I’m a Iranian-American photographer and journalist currently based in Amsterdam. However, I lived in New York City for several years and started my Muaythai journey there at Renzo Gracie Academy. Since 2017, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer for the USMF and have made three IFMA trips with the national team. Below I share a few reasons why I love volunteering for USA Muaythai!

  1. I have made friends all over the world!

I’ve been involved with Muaythai since 2014, but it wasn’t until I started volunteering that I was able to connect with others in the international community. Now I have relationships with people on literally every continent.

When I decided to move from New York to Amsterdam, I didn’t worry that I wouldn’t know anyone because several USMF coaches put me in touch with their contacts on the Dutch team and in the Dutch fighting community. I really love going to IFMA and seeing team members reunite with their international friends.

  1. I have improved significantly as a photographer

I started volunteering just a few months after I picked up a camera, and although I had an eye, I definitely needed to improve technically. I was very fortunate that Jeff Dojillo guided me through this process (and still does)! From my very first assignment in 2017 at the USMTO to my current role as Media Coordinator for the Media Team, he’s been by my side.

I’ve experienced few things more stressful than a down internet connection at 1 am in Turkey with photos too dark and a deadline just hours away, but he’s been there to support me. These experiences have improved my work by leaps and bounds and given me much more confidence as a photojournalist.

  1. I have been given great opportunities

Volunteering for the USMF has given me the opportunity to work for well-known athletes and promotions. Not only have my accomplishments looked good on my resume, but I’ve been able to produce a number of projects that I’m very proud of. These photos and articles have shown what I’m capable of, and that’s led to even more work!

As a freelancer, you’re only as good as your last project, and the USMF has given me many assignments that helped me stand out.

  1. I have gotten to be part of a great team

From the coaches to the athletes to the staff, I’ve really enjoyed working with the USA Muaythai team. I’m inspired by the athletes who’ve sacrificed everything to be able to step into the ring. I’m motivated by the coaches who dedicate their time and resources to make USA real contenders in the tournaments. And I’m very grateful to the staff who make sure everything runs smoothly!

I’m fortunate to be involved both on the front lines and behind the scenes, and to realize how much effort it takes to build Muaythai in the United States. Even from Europe, I’m proud to continue volunteering and give back to the community that has helped me get to where I am now.

  1. I get to live my dreams!

I always wanted to be a journalist and see the world. I’ve had the chance to see different countries and places while telling the stories of athletes and coaches that I find inspiring. I have so many great memories, whether it’s editing photos at 2 a.m. at the airport at Abu Dhabi or proudly capturing a historic victory by a U.S. athlete – it’s the life I’ve always wanted.

This is just the beginning! I’m looking forward to the upcoming World Games and future IFMA tournaments. The world of Muaythai is finally waking up from its hibernation and I look forward to seeing all my friends again!
